The Cliffs of Moher are the most popular tourist attractions in Ireland. The view from the top of the cliffs is fantastic. I visited the Cliffs of Moher with some English students from Limerick. It was a nice day. The sun appeared there to make us happy. We could see the Aran Islands in Galway Bay and other interesting points of Ireland.
As you can see in this picture above, I was a little crazy! Ha! The view from the top was breathtaking that I didn’t notice that I was sitting near a very steep side of the cliff.
The cliffs are extremely dangerous. I saw some boards to alert the tourists.
The Cliffs of Moher reach 214 metres (702 feet) at their highest point and stretch for 8 kilometres (5 miles) along the Atlantic Ocean. The cliffs are located in Liscannor, in County Clare on the west coast of Ireland. The nearest villages are Doolin and Liscannor.
There is an international airport, Shannon International Airport, that serves the west coast of Ireland. It takes about 50 minutes to get from airport to Cliffs of Moher by road. If you come from Dublin by road, it takes approximately 4 hours to get to the cliffs.
You can get to the cliffs by private or public transport. By public transport, there are direct buses that leave daily both from Galway and Ennis cities to the Cliffs of Moher.
The Cliffs of Moher are an important wildlife area. The region is a Special Protection Area (SPA) for Birds. There are many seabirds living there. The cliffs are perfect for bird watching. I could see and hear some of these birds there.
A day tour usually takes a full day. We left from Limerick in the morning and we spent a day long on our trip. Besides the Cliffs of Moher, we also visited Doolin village. We took a walk from the Cliffs of Moher, approximately 2 hours, to Doolin along the coastal walk.
The Cliffs of Moher have served as inspiration for a number of films including The Yank (2013), Blind Pass (2012), Burke & Hare (2010), Harry Potter & the Half Blood Prince (2009), Into the West (1992), Hear My Song (1992), The Princess Bride (1987), The Mackintosh Man (1973), Ryan’s Daughter (1970), The Guns of Navarone (1961), and others.
The cliffs are also famous as the location of several TV shows, music videos and advertisements. They have appeared in literature as well.
It’s important to check the weather before visiting the Cliffs of Moher. Probably you won’t be able to see the spectacular views of the cliffs in poor weather conditions.
