Villarrica Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in South America. However, Villarrica Volcano is one of the main Chile attractions. It is also known as “Rucapillán” which means “Pillan’s house” in the Mapuche language. It is possible to visit the volcano throughout the year but only when the weather and the volcanic activity permit. During the hottest months of the year, guided hikes climb to the summit of the volcano and in the winter season, a ski centre operates on its slopes.
I was exciting to climb the volcano but I couldn’t do it. On that occasion, Villarrica Volcano was declared on yellow alert by the National Service of Geology and Mining which means it is possible to get to the volcano up to the cafeteria but all the ascent up to its crater is forbidden.
