I’m quite sure you should have thought that I disappeared from Jolly Along. Nope! I’m here!
Have you ever heard this name?
I was always interested in toponymy (the study of place names and a branch of onomastics, the study of the origin, history, and use of proper names).
Toponymy came from Greek language. It is derived from two Greek words: tópos (“place”) and ónoma (“name”).
I was searching for places to visit in the UK when I found that place: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, a community on the island of Anglesey in Wales. I wasn’t there, but who knows someday I’ll take some pictures of this place.
This city is also known as Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, Llanfairpwll, Llanfair PG or Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll. It is not surprise that they found some ways to shorten that name. Actually, the long form was as invented for promotional purposes a long time ago, in the 1860s. The name means in Welsh “Parish of St. Mary in the Hollow of the White Hazel near the rapid whirlpool and the parish of St. Tysilio with a red cave”. It is the longest place name in Europe and the second longest official one-word place name in the world, but believe it or not, it is not the largest name in the world.
In New Zealand there is a hill called Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu but you can call it Taumata.
The name means “The summit where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, the slider, climber of mountains, the land-swallower who travelled about, played his nose flute to his loved one” in Maori language. Maori language 30,000 in New Zealand. Since 1987, it has been one of New Zealand’s official languages.
This New Zealander hill has been listed in the Guinness World Records as the longest place name in the world with 85 characters. Sometimes are used longer versions of that name.
But if you consider names with spaces or hyphens you should list the full name of the capital of Thailand. I’m quite sure you should have heard the name Bangkok, but do you know its full ceremonial name is: Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphimanawatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit? 176 letters in English but “only” 112 letters + 7 spaces in Thai. The full name of the city means “City of angels, great city of immortals, magnificent city of the nine gems, seat of the king, city of royal palaces, home of gods incarnate, erected by Vishvakarman at Indra’s behest.”
